Sanctions and their Effects

Sanctions are another way to dissuade or force a clan to do something. But how effective are they in reality.

What Are Sanctions?

Sanctions refer to a variety of measures imposed by one clan or a group of clans against another clan, organization, or individual to encourage a change in behaviour, punish non-compliance with territorial norms or laws, or achieve specific policy objectives. They can be used to force multi-accounters, nukers and toxic individuals out of the community and potentially lose interest in ruining the game. It is an alternative approach to diplomacy to the traditional war declarations we have experienced in Territorial.io.

SPQR Sanctions.

Introduction.

On the 28th of May, 2022, sanctions were placed on SPQR by X, OG, FR and Arctic in order to force SPQR to ban Doomsie and Fullsendistan from their server. These demands were made because Doomsie and Fullsendistan are toxic personalities in the community, having nuked multiple servers and due to being banned everywhere else in the community. This was a problem because Doomsie, one of the people to be banned if the sanctions were to be lifted, was admin in the SPQR server. This lead the server to split in 3.

What did they Include?

The sanctioning clans banned all staff members of SPQR and forced them to cut ties with SPQR or for the demands to be met by SPQR before they were unbanned. These clans also demoted any staff members who contributed points to SPQR, forcing any SPQR members out of staff. This harmed both advertisement and points in game due to the clans being on extremely unfriendly terms.

Consequences of the SPQR Sanctions.

  1. Due to these Sanctions SPQR fractured into 3 servers:
    • Democratic SPQR
    • Imperialist SPQR
    • OG SPQR
  2. Doomsie has been banned from SPQR
  3. The Democratic Faction was endorsed by X, OG and Union
  4. Imperialist SPQR merged into Democratic SPQR
  5. Doomsie nukes the original SPQR
  6. They went from 1.0 points to 0.65 points

Conclusions.

Sanctions on a clan by the whole community can force the clan to agree and lead to a decline due to players in the sanctioning clan refusing to donate and might lead to fullsends towards a the sanctioned clan. Advertising can be cut off if the Community Server gets involved in the sanctions, meaning no new members can join the discord and thus lead to a decline in member count. Some members may leave the clan due to not wanting to be banned throughout the community because of their clan leaders.

These factors can make a relatively stable clan lose alot of points, like how SPQR lost over ⅓ of their points during the sanctions.
